Road will change city for the worse

Letter to the editor

I hate to envision how much Juneau will change for the worse if and when the road-to-nowhere project comes to pass. I was born and raised in Juneau, and I lived my life there until developments in my own backyard stirred me to leave.

Sound off on the important issues of the week at juneaublogger.com/voxbox

I lived out on Fritz Cove Road, and when the subdivisions went up, it changed everything. So, 13 years ago, I moved to Haines. It is a place that reminds me of what Juneau was like when I was a kid.

Now, with the real prospect of this inefficient, costly road project, I shudder to think of what will happen to Juneau and its residents. I think of RVs in town and the effects of increased traffic on the daily lives of residents and on the roads themselves. I think of the residents and visitors that will need to drive so far simply to catch a ferry. I can imagine the winters along that road, and the risks of avalanches just seem too high.

The road will clearly be more dangerous than riding the ferry. It will bring more traffic and taxes, not economic development. And travelers even from Haines can expect at least another half-hour of travel to make the trip. All this is on top of stripping Juneau of what remains of its charm and history. I cannot support this project.
