Juneau girls will open vs. Chugiak

The Juneau-Douglas High School girls basketball team will have to beat the defending champions if the Crimson Bears are going to win the Class 4A state tournament this weekend.

The Region V-Class 4A champion Crimson Bears will take on the defending champion Chugiak Mustangs at 6:50 p.m. Thursday in the first round of the Class 4A state at Anchorage's Sullivan Arena. Chugiak took third place in the Region IV tournament on Saturday.

The Class 4A teams are seeded based on the WPI (Winning Percentage Index), which ranks teams based on their games against other Class 4A teams and the strength of their schedules. Juneau (19-5 overall) is seeded fourth, while Chugiak is seeded fifth. Juneau and Chugiak haven't played each other since January 2003.

Also in the Juneau and Chugiak side of the bracket is top-seeded Wasilla, the Region III champion, which takes on eighth-seeded Service at 8:30 p.m. on Thursday. Service took second place in Region IV.

In the other half of the bracket, second-seeded Lathrop takes on Homer at 11:20 a.m. Thursday while Region IV champion and third-seeded Dimond plays Colony at 1 p.m.

The Juneau vs. Chugiak winner will take on the Wasilla-Service winner at 8:30 p.m. on Friday, while the other semifinal game pits the Lathrop-Homer winner vs. the Dimond-Colony winner at 6:50 p.m. The Juneau-Chugiak loser plays the Wasilla-Service loser at 1 p.m. on Friday, with the other loser-out game at 11:20 a.m.

The Class 4A girls championship game takes place at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, with the fourth-sixth place game at 9:40 a.m. and the third-fifth place game at 11:20 a.m.

The Region V-Class 4A boys champion Ketchikan Kings also drew the defending champion for their first-round game, as the eighth-seeded Kings take on the two-time defending state champion and top-seeded Bartlett Golden Bears at 5:10 p.m. on Thursday.

Other Class 4A boys first-round games include second-seeded Lathrop vs. seventh-seeded Wasilla at 8 a.m., third-seeded West Anchorage vs. sixth-seeded Kodiak at 9:40 a.m. and fourth-seeded East Anchorage vs. fifth-seeded Palmer at 3:30 p.m.

The Ketchikan-Bartlett winner takes on the East-Palmer winner at 5:10 p.m. on Friday in one semifinal, while the other semifinal is at 3:30 p.m. The Ketchikan-Bartlett loser plays the East-Palmer loser at 9:40 a.m. on Friday, with the other loser-out game at 8 a.m.

The Class 4A boys championship game is at 9:15 p.m. on Saturday, with the fourth-sixth place game at 8 a.m. and the third-fifth place game at 1 p.m.

In the Class 3A girls tournament, which is seeded on a rotation basis between the various regions, the Class 3A poll top-ranked Petersburg Vikings play the Dillingham Wolverines at 3:30 p.m. in Thursday's opening round at Sullivan Arena. The Class 4A and Class 3A state tournaments take place at the same time, with two basketball courts being separated by a curtain.

In other Class 3A girls first-round games, the Mount Edgecumbe Braves take on the Barrow Whalers at 9:40 a.m., Seward takes on Valdez at 8 a.m. and Monroe Catholic plays Nikiski at 5:10 p.m. on Thursday.

The Petersburg-Dillingham winner plays the Monroe-Nikiski winner at 5:10 p.m. on Friday, while the Seward-Valdez winner plays the Mount Edgecumbe-Barrow winner at 3:30 p.m. The consolation games are at 8 a.m. and 9:40 a.m. on Friday.

On Saturday, the Class 3A girls championship game is at 3:15 p.m., with the fourth-sixth place game at 8 a.m. and the third-fifth place game at 1 p.m.

In the Class 3A boys tournament, the Region V-Class 3A champion Metlakatla Chiefs take on the Nome-Beltz Nanooks at 11:30 a.m. to open the tournament on Thursday.

In other Class 3A boys first-round games, Barrow takes on Mount Edgecumbe at 1 p.m., Heritage Christian School plays Eielson at 6:50 p.m. and Valdez plays Anchorage Christian Schools at 8:30 p.m. on Thursday.

The Metlakatla-Nome winner plays the Valdez-ACS winner at 8:30 p.m. on Friday, while the other semifinal is at 6:50 p.m. and pits the Heritage-Eielson winner against the Barrow-Mount Edgecumbe winner. The consolation bracket games are at 11:20 a.m. and 1 p.m. on Friday.

The Class 4A boys championship game is at 5 p.m. on Saturday, with the fourth-sixth place game at 9:40 a.m. and the third-fifth place game at 11:20 a.m.
