NEW CALENDAR ITEMS

• Raincountry Flyfishers meeting/fly-tying session - Raincountry Flyfishers will hold a semi-monthly fly-tying session on Thursday, March 17 from 7-9 p.m. at the Mendenhall River Community School library. Ron Hulstein will lead the group in the tying of patterns for Dolly Varden. The public is invited; materials are provided. Info: Mark Vinsel, 586-3424.

• Southeast Conference-Class 3A/4A basketball tournament: Juneau-Douglas High School hosts the 2005 Southeast Tournament, featuring boys and girls basketball teams, dance teams, cheerleaders and pep bands from Juneau, Ketchikan, Sitka, Haines, Petersburg, Wrangell, Mount Edgecumbe, Craig and Metlakatla. Game and performance schedules TBA.

Sunday-Saturday, March 20-26

• Juneau Lions Club 59th Annual Gold Medal Basketball Tournament: The tournament returns with more than two dozen teams in four brackets, with all games at the Juneau-Douglas High School main gym. Game schedules will be printed in the Empire later this week, and are available on the Web at http://www.acsalaska.net/~grampe2/Gold_Medal_2005.html.

Monday-Friday, March 21-25

• 2005 Southeast Shootout Basketball Tournament - This middle-school basketball tournament, sponsored by Juneau HoopTime and featuring boys and girls teams from across Southeast, will be held at Floyd Dryden Middle School. Games will also be held at Riverbend Elementary School on Wednesday and Thursday, March 23-24. MEETINGS / CLINICS / ANNOUNCEMENTS

• Eaglecrest Ski Area March events - It's March Madness time at Eaglecrest Ski Area. Events include: the ORCA Ski-a-thon on March 19; a variety of ski and snowboard camps over Spring Break, March 21-25; Alaska Youth Ski League state championships from March 24-27; and an Easter celebration with a purple bunny chase, egg hunt and bonnet contest on March 27. • Juneau Softball Association team registration - The Juneau Softball Association will hold its team registration on Wednesday, March 16, at the Dzantik'i Heeni Middle School library. Coed registration will be held from 6-7:15 p.m., and men's/women's team registration will be held from 7:15-8:30 p.m. Additional information and registration forms are available on the Web at www.jsaweb.org. • Wells Fargo Tennis & Recquetball Tournament - JRC/The Alaska Club will host this tournament from March 17-20 at its Mendenhall Valley location. Players of all levels are invited to enter the tournament in men's, women's, mixed or junior singles and doubles divisions. The registration deadline is Friday, March 11. Tournament fees are $35+tax for JRC members, $45+tax for non-members and $15+tax for juniors; there is a flat fee of $15 to enter a second event. Fees include court time, balls, tourney T-shirt, lunch on the weekend and prizes for top finishers. Info: Gail O'Dell, 789-2181.

• Fly Fishing 101 class - Fly Fishing 101 will be offered on Tuesday and Thursday, March 29 and 31, from 7-9 p.m. at Floyd Dryden Middle School. The class has been taught for the past 10 years and is suggested for beginners wishing to learn enough to pursue the sport. The class includes unbiased recommendations for equipment, techniques and fishing spots. Class cost is $14. Info: Juneau Community Schools, 463-1717, or Tony Soltys, 789-9159.

• Evening Masters Swimming program - The Augustus Brown pool hosts a twice-weekly Evening Masters Swimming program. The program will meet from 6:30-7:30 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and is designed to promote and improve the physical and mental well-being of adults age 19-older. Participants must be able to swim crawlstroke and backstroke. Info: Augustus Brown swim pool, 586-5325.

OPEN GYMS / SCRIMMAGES / ONGOING

• Youth open gyms - Meet from 8-11 p.m. on Saturdays at Dzantik'i Heeni Middle School gym. Youth open gyms are free for students in grades 5-12. Info: Community schools director Joyce Kitka, 463-1700, Ext. 327.

• Mount Jumbo preschool open gym - Preschool open gyms for children ages 1-6 and an adult parent or caregiver take place from 10:30 a.m. to noon on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays through April. There must be at least one adult present for every four kids. There is a $1 per child fee, or punchcards for $10 and $50 can be bought at the gym, which is located at 909 4th Street in Douglas. Tricycles, mats, balls, a Little Tykes climber, building blocks and a kid-sized basketball hoop are available. • Zach Gordon Youth Center climbing wall - New climbing wall hours are 5-7 p.m. on Mondays, and 3:30-7 p.m. on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays. The climbing wall can be used by people of all ages. Climbers age 20-younger climb free, while adults 21-older pay $5 to use the wall. Youth-adult interaction is encouraged, so an adult climbing with a youth pays no fee. • Juneau Community Schools open gyms - Basketball, volleyball and soccer open gyms for adults are available several times a week. Basketball and volleyball open gyms are held Fridays and Sundays from 7-9 p.m. at Dzantik'i Heeni Middle School. Soccer open gyms are held Saturdays from 6-8 p.m. at Dzantik'i Heeni Middle School and Sundays from 6:45-8:45 p.m. at Floyd Dryden Middle School. The cost is $5 per session, and 10-session punchcards are available for $40 each. Info: Juneau Community Schools, 463-1717.

• Basketball/volleyball court rentals available - The Juneau Community Schools program has basketball/volleyball court rental times available from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturdays at Dzantik'i Heeni Middle School. The cost to rent the court is $20 per hour, which must be paid at the time of rental. This is for adult activities only. Info: Juneau Community Schools, 463-1717.

• Juneau Department of Parks and Recreation Wednesday and Saturday hikes - For updates on locations of Wednesday and Saturday group hikes, call the Juneau Parks and Recreation Hikes Hotline. Always remember to bring plenty of food and water, wear warm layers of clothing and proper footwear for the hike. No dogs or firearms are allowed. Wednesday hikes are limited to hikers 18 years of age or older. Saturday hikes are open to families, and children must be accompanied by an adult.
