Collins will replace Judge Larry R. Weeks, who will retire in June. Weeks has served as First District Presiding Judge since 1993.

"I appreciate Judge Collins' willingness to take on the extra duties of Presiding Judge. I am confident that she will provide outstanding leadership for the first judicial district," Fabe said in a written statement. "I also most sincerely thank Judge Weeks for his many years of extraordinary service. Judge Weeks has consistently guided the first district with great competence and compassion."

Collins was appointed to the Superior Court in Juneau in 1999. She previously served as a district court judge in Ketchikan for four years and as a federal magistrate judge for nine years.
