Today starts the Region-V Class 4A tournament in Ketchikan, and we wish the Juneau boys and girls high school teams the best of luck.
Three towns in Southeast - Juneau, Ketchikan and Sitka - are vying for the sole berth to the state championship. It's a single-elimination tournament with winner-take-all. Both our teams are former state champions, although this year their records at least don't necessarily reflect their outstanding achievement.
The boys team currently has a 14-8 record, with the girls at 13-9. They've both won some games people thought they wouldn't and lost some games they were expected to win. On top of that, key players have gotten hurt. But that's the nature of sports and it's also the way of life.
In any event, Juneau should be proud of our high school athletes and we encourage everyone to pull for the hometown teams.
The girls play Sitka today at 3:30 p.m. Audio of the game can be heard on KINY. The winner takes on Ketchikan tomorrow with audio at 7:15 p.m.
The boys team got a pass for the first round, with the winner of the Ketchikan-Sitka game today taking on the Juneau team tomorrow. Friday's game can be heard on KINY starting at 9 p.m.
If you can't make it to the games, at least show your support by listening in. They're our ambassadors and great athletes to boot.
