KETCHIKAN -- Craig Carter scored 24 of his game-high 29 points in the first half Wednesday night as the Craig Panthers boys basketball team claimed a 92-70 victory over the Mount Edgecumbe Braves in the first round of the Region V-Class 3A tournament at Ketchikan High School.

Carter scored 10 points in the first quarter as the Panthers took an 18-11 lead, then he added 14 points in the second quarter as Craig blew out to a 50-30 halftime lead. Carter nailed five of his six 3-pointers in the first half.

In addition to the performance from Carter, four other Panthers hit for double figures as Craig had a balanced scoring attack.

Greg Westfall scored 21 points for the Panthers, with Raymond Douville adding 14 points and the duo of Thom Mills and Sean Mitchell chipping in 11 points apiece for Craig. With the victory, the Panthers advanced to today's 1:45 p.m. semifinal game against top-seeded Wrangell.

Eric Alstrom scored 25 points to lead Mount Edgecumbe, which plays Petersburg in Friday's 10:15 a.m. consolation game. The Braves also had double-figure scoring from Tyler Ivanoff with 14 points, Sheldon Dock with 13 points and Randy Gloko with 10 points.

In Wednesday's other firstround boys game, the Metlakatla Chiefs claimed a 61-39 victory over the Petersburg Vikings. Metlakatla advanced to tonight's 9 p.m. semifinal against the second-seeded Haines Glacier Bears.

Chevy Hayward scored 21 points to lead the Chiefs, which grabbed a 34-11 halftime lead and cruised the rest of the way. Apollo Marsden added 11 points for Metlakatla and Anthony Gogert chipped in 10.

Scott Roden was the only Petersburg player to score in double figures, tossing in 23 points for the Vikings. Nick Boggs was the second-highest Petersburg scorer with five points.

In Wednesday's Class 3A girls action, freshman Heather Douville scored 19 points as the Craig girls basketball team claimed a 49-40 victory over the Petersburg Vikings. Douville made eight of her 11 free throws in the fourth quarter, which included the Panthers' final seven points in the game, as Craig pulled away down the stretch. Craig led 33-30 at the end of the third quarter, but Douville went 6-for-6 in the final minutes to ice away the victory.

Polly Hamilton scored 16 points for Craig, which included four 3pointers and 13 points in the first half. Craig will play the top-seeded Mount Edgecumbe Braves in tonight's 7:15 p.m. semifinal.

Brandi Cole scored 15 points to lead Petersburg, while Amber Beardslee added 11. The Vikings will play Haines at 8:30 a.m. Friday in the consolation game.

In Wednesday's other girls first-round game, the Wrangell Wolves beat the Haines Glacier Bears 44-33 as Lizzy Romane scored 14 of her 18 points in the second half. Wrangell played the second-seeded Metlakatla Miss Chiefs in today's noon semifinal.
