Posted: Wednesday, March 16, 2005

Chatham Holt and Angela Wright won the boys and girls "Ski Meister" titles last weekend at the first Juneau Invitational Cross-Country Ski Series.

The two-day race series, which included events for both classic and skate-ski techniques, drew 38 skiers - 19 adults and 19 youths. Saturday's race was a classic event on the lower loop at Eaglecrest Ski Area, while Sunday's skate-ski race was held at the U.S. Forest Service's Mendenhall Lake Campground.

Both races allowed skiers to choose distances of 3.2, 6.5 or 10 kilometers. Ski conditions were fair, but the races were held under partly cloudy skies.

Holt and Wright each won a new pair of skate skis for posting the fastest combined times among boys and girls racers. Dan Fremgen won the Ski Meister title for adult competitors.

Race participants dubbed the races the "Alfalfa Invitational" - a nod to the annual Buckwheat Ski Classic, to be held March 26 in Skagway. For more information on that race, look on the Web at http://www.skagwaynews.com.

The Juneau ski series was sponsored by the Juneau 4-H Cross-Country Ski Club, the Juneau Nordic Ski Club, Eaglecrest Ski Area and the Foggy Mountain Shop.
