Bill to expand mandatory attendance age advances

Posted: Wednesday, March 16, 2011

JUNEAU — A bill that would require students to attend school from age 6 to 18 has cleared another legislative hurdle.

The measure, which previously passed the Senate Education Committee, passed out of the judiciary committee on Monday.

Supporters of the change, including education officials, see it as key to reaching children at a younger age and avoiding any perception that the state sanctions quitting when they’re 16.

Currently, children must attend school from age 7 to 16.

The measure heads to the finance committee for further consideration.
