Academy Awards event raises funds

An Academy Awards gala to raise scholarship funds for the Juneau Arts and Humanities Council is scheduled at 6 p.m. March 26 at Centennial Hall.

The official program, starting at 7 p.m., features a telecast of the Oscar awards with commercials edited out, plus live local entertainment, food, prizes and balloting. Participants will be filmed as they make a red-carpet entry, which will be displayed on the overhead screen.

The scholarship program gave away more than $6,000 to students last year.

Coast Guard scholarship offered

The Coast Guard Women's Association of Juneau is offering a $500 scholarship to dependent spouses and children of active, reserve, retired or deceased personnel.

The scholarship, available to local residents, is applicable toward any post-secondary education program for the 2000-2001 academic year.

Applications are available at the Coast Guard Education Office in the room 731B of the Federal Building, the Juneau-Douglas High School counseling center or by calling Veronica Whitehead at 790-4297. The application deadline is April 30.

Humane Society seeks volunteers

The Gastineau Humane Society is seeking people interested in volunteering at the shelter. An orientation meeting is scheduled from noon to 1 p.m. March 25.
