The weekend is sponsored by the Capital Chevrolet, the Juneau Ski Club, the Juneau Ski Patrol, Coastal Helicopters and the Juneau Empire. For more information, call 790-2001.

Buckwheat Nordic race March 22-23

JUNEAU - The 16th Annual Buckwheat Ski Classic, held in Skagway and on the White Pass, is March 22 and 23.

Adult cross-country ski races include 50K, 25K and 10K events. A 5K cross-country ski race for kids 12 and under is also planned, as is a 5K snowshoe sprint.

The entry fee is $50 and includes breakfast on race day, the race, a long-sleeved race shirt, the race banquet and a dance.

Entry forms are available at the Foggy Mountain Shop, 134 Franklin St. in downtown Juneau, 586-6780, or through the Mountain Shop in Skagway, (907) 983-2544.

"The race is a real blast and keeps most skiers going year after year," said Marc Scholten of the Juneau Nordic Ski Club. "I highly recommend making a long weekend out of it and do some skiing at Log Cabin (race site), Carcross, Mt. MacIntyre, Mary Lake, Marsh Lake and other set tracks in the Yukon-BC area."

The Friday ferry to Skagway leaves at 9 a.m. and return ferries leave Skagway on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday.

As many as 40 percent of the racers are usually from Juneau, organizers said.
