Skiers push for extended season

Posted: Sunday, March 17, 2002

JUNEAU - Some local skiers are hoping to persuade the city-owned Eaglecrest Ski Area to remain open an extra month this spring.

A proposal being circulated via e-mail asks for interest in developing a late-season pass, costing perhaps $80, to keep Eaglecrest open through May 15. The ski area's final day is scheduled for April 14.

Eaglecrest Business Manager Gary Mendivil said he's heard of the idea. He said the area would like to stay open later if there's enough snow, but has to consider the cost. He said staff members are checking with the Juneau Ski Patrol about the availability of staff and volunteers for an extended season. A financial model would also have to be developed, he said.

No decision has been made. "We welcome their enthusiasm," Mendivil said.
