Colorado man dies in fall into Matanuska Glacier crevasse

Posted: Monday, March 17, 2003

ANCHORAGE - A Colorado man was killed when the snowmobile he was riding plunged into a crevasse on the Matanuska Glacier.

Michael Yount, 43, of Loveland, Colo., was touring the glacier with his wife Sunday afternoon when the accident occurred.

Alaska State Troopers said the Younts were following guide Bill Stevens of the Glacier Park Lodge on a tour of the glacier when Michael Yount veered about 40 yards off the established trail and plunged into the deep fissure in the ice.

A crevasse rescue class was being conducted nearby and members were able to reach Yount's body, but were unable to remove him.

Alaska State Troopers transported members of the Alaska Mountain Rescue Group to the site. Rescuers removed Yount's body late Sunday night.
