Eaglecrest Ski Area - UAS Winter Games: This event is open to the general public with pre-registration. Events include a giant slalom race on Lower Hilary's Run at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, a slopestyle competition at the Terrain Park at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, Nordic skate and classical races on the Lower Loop course at 10:30 a.m. on Sunday, a team race (four-person teams with one Telemark skier, one alpine skier, one snowboarder and one wildcard person, with bonus points for costumes) at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, and a chili feed and awards ceremony with live music at 4 p.m. on Sunday. 2004 Herb Jaenicke Memorial Badminton Tournament - This tournament takes place Friday through Sunday, March 26-28, at the Mendenhall Valley location of JRC-The Racquet Club. The deadline to enter this tournament is Monday, March 22. This tournament is open to players of all skill levels. Entry fee includes a tournament t-shirt, game birdies, court time and prizes for the top two finishers in each division. Entry fees are $25 (plus tax for all fees) for JRC-The Alaska Club members, $30 for non-members and $15 for juniors (age younger than 13). Buckwheat Ski Classic - Registration forms are available in Juneau at Foggy Mountain Shop for this annual event that takes place in Skagway on Saturday, March 27. Events include 10-kilometer, 25K and 50K ski races, a 5K kids' race and a 5K snowshoe sprint. The registration deadline was Monday, March 15. Juneau Sports Association adult slow pitch softball registration - Team registration takes place on Tuesday, March 30, at the Travelodge Hotel Meeting Room. Mount Jumbo Gym preschool open gym - This Juneau Department of Parks and Recreation program is open from 10:30 a.m. to noon every Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday at 909 Fourth Street in Douglas for children ages 1-6 and their parents or caregivers. A ratio of four children to one adult must be met. Balls, mats, trikes, scooters, large building blocks, parachutes and a Little Tykes climber system will be available for use. Zach Gordon Youth Center climbing wall - Climbing wall hours are 3-7 p.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays and 3-9 p.m. on Fridays. The climbing wall can be used by people of all ages. Climbers age 20-younger climb free, while adults 21-older pay $5 to use the wall. Youth-adult interaction is encouraged, so an adult climbing with a youth pays no fee. Treadwell Arena programs - The ice arena is open seven days a week with a variety of public open skates, youth open skates, pond hockey and rental times available (see Treadwell Arena Web site for details). The rink is closed for ice maintenance from 7:45-10:45 a.m. on Mondays and from 7:45 a.m. to noon on Fridays. Fees for open skates are $4 adults, $3 youths (age 17-younger) and $2 seniors (age 65-older). Fees for pond hockey are $5 adults, $4 youths and $3 seniors. Skate rental is $2 for adults and youths, and $1.90 for seniors. Passes are available for open skates, pond hockey and skate rental. Facility rental is $150 an hour. Eaglecrest Ski Area nordic ski lessons - Nordic ski lessons are available through the Eaglecrest Ski and Snowboard School. A 2-hour learn-to-classic-ski lesson or a learn-to-skate-ski lesson costs $17 each, while 2-hour intermediate and advanced clinics cost $20. Learn-to-Telemark-ski lessons are $17 and include and all-day surface lift ticket, while 2-hour intermediate and advanced classes cost $20. Juneau Department of Parks and Recreation Wednesday and Saturday hikes - For updates on locations of Wednesday and Saturday group hikes, call the Juneau Parks and Recreation Hikes Hotline. Always remember to bring plenty of food and water, wear warm layers of clothing and proper footwear for the hike. No dogs or firearms are allowed. Wednesday hikes are limited to hikers 18 years of age or older. Saturday hikes are open to families, and children must be accompanied by an adult.
