Ferry rides expensive

To take a family of four and the minivan from Juneau to Skagway and back is anywhere from $600 to $650, depending on which ferry you take. This is completely asinine. It's only 70 miles past the end of our road.

During our 2004 family vacation, we drove 4,100 miles. We had four people in the car, loaded to the gills, drove 75 mph, and had the air conditioning on all the time. And the total gas bill for this month-long, 4,000-mile vacation? Just under $400.

I'd like to spend some money in Skagway and Whitehorse, but who can afford to take the ferry? Even if you can afford it, why would you? That's like paying $100 for a Big Mac.

I have a new slogan for the anti-road people: "Keeping the lower and middle class here, where they belong."
