Skipper Rod Schneider stands next to the ice-covered fishing boat Amatuli at Thomsen Harbor on Wednesday in Sitka. Schneider and two crewmen brought the boat across the Gulf of Alaska, a trip of more than 1,000 miles, to take part in the upcoming Sitka Sound sac roe herring opening. He said he and others crossing the gulf at the same time were met with wind gusts of 70 mph and blinding snow squalls on the last three days of the six-day trip. Temperatures in Sitka were at record lows Tuesday and Wednesday.
