NOME - Montana musher Doug Swingley got married Sunday under the burled arch that marks the finish line of the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race.
The four-time Iditarod champion wed longtime companion Melanie Shirilla as several dozen friends, relatives, mushers and visitors looked on amid a thick snowfall on Front Street.
Swingley, of Lincoln, Mont., shared the wedding limelight with fellow Montanans and Iditarod finishers Jason Barron and Harmony Kanavle, who also took their vows.
Race Marshal Mark Nordman officiated. Several sled dogs stood by as canine bridesmaids and groomsmen, according to KNOM radio in Nome. Both brides, dressed in parkas, tossed their bouquets into the crowd following the ceremony.
Swingley arrived in Nome on Saturday afternoon in 40th place, his worst finish ever. Early in the race, Swingley announced he was not racing competitively this year.
