High school basketball - Region V-Class 2A Championships: Boys and girls teams from Skagway, Angoon, Hoonah, Kake, Klawock, Yakutat, Hydaburg and Thorne Bay compete for the right to represent Southeast Alaska at the Class 2A state tournament in Anchorage. All region tournament games and matchups are TBA at Juneau-Douglas High School. Roughhouse Friday boxing - Doors open at 6 p.m. with bouts starting at 7:30 p.m. at the Alaska Native Brotherhood Hall. Main events include lightweights Scott "Kid Roo" Robinson of Sitka against Andrew "The Gun" Swanston of Juneau in one bout, with heavyweights Russ "Dirt" Stevens of Juneau vs. "Crazy" Eddie Cavett of Anchorage in the other. MS Walk or Run (5K) - Registration for this fund-raising event is going on now, and team registration forms can be picked up at JRC/The Alaska Club, Foggy Mountain Shop or Mendenhall Auto. Water Safety Instructor course - This WSI course, cosponsored by the American Red Cross and the Augustus G. Brown Swimming Pool, takes place from April 22-May 17 at the pool and is for anybody wanting to be certified to teach swim lessons. All participants must be at least 17 years old and be able to pass a precourse skills test and possess a current FIT (Fundamentals of Instructor Training) certificate, although FIT classes will be offered in conjunction with the WSI course. There is a mandatory precourse session at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 16, and you should bring a swimsuit to the class for work in the pool. Course times are 5:30-9 p.m. on April 22, 24, 29, May 1, 6, 8, 13 and 15, and from 8:30 a.m. to noon on April 26 and May 17. Julie Hughes Triathlon volunteers - Volunteers are needed for the 19th annual Julie Hughes Triathlon in Sitka. The triathlon takes place at 9 a.m. on Saturday, May 11, and all registration takes place from 5-7:30 p.m. on Friday, May 10. Adult athletes will cover a course with a 1,000-meter swim, a 12-mile bike and a five-mile run. 4-H Nordic Ski Club - The fifth year of this club for youth and adult skiers will meet every Sunday afternoon through March 16 (or until the snow is melted) at various locations TBA with club leaders Odin Brudie and Frankie Pillifant ($6 membership fee). The club has a limited number of pairs of classic and skating ski sets for rent for $20 for the entire winter season. Club leaders will help parents size skis for their children. The club only rents youth skis, adults must provide their own. If families couldn't attend the Dec. 14 registration meeting, they should call the 4-H office and enroll by phone.
