Posted: Thursday, March 18, 2004

Call them the "Fab Five" of Little Norway.

The Petersburg girls basketball squad - the state's top-ranked Class 3A girls team - will bring its talented starting lineup of five seniors to Anchorage's Sullivan Arena starting today for the state tournament.

Katrina Berg, Tessa Bergmann, Britni Birchell, Kayleigh Short and Autumn Streuli have helped the Region V-Class 3A-champion Vikings to a 21-2 record this season, and all five were named to the All-Region Team.

The Vikings nearly knocked off Class 4A champ Juneau-Douglas in Saturday's crossover game in Sitka before falling 42-39.

Petersburg, which took third at last year's state tournament after losing to eventual-champion Nikiski, faces Dillingham at 3:30 p.m. today to open this year's tourney.

Mount Edgecumbe, the other Southeast qualifier, faces third-ranked Barrow at 9:40 a.m. today. Other teams in the field are second-ranked Seward, fourth-ranked Monroe Catholic (Fairbanks), fifth-ranked Valdez and two-time defending champion Nikiski.
