The Juneau School Board on Tuesday approved taking $1.3 million from a reserve fund to cover an increase in the expected cost of renovating one of the district's elementary schools.
Staff from the city and from the Juneau School District recommended the School Board and the city approve an $11.5 million bid by Dawson Construction, which is based in Ketchikan, to renovate Glacier Valley Elementary School.
The original estimate for the project was $10.3 million.
Staff from the city and district asked the district to dip into the interest from it major maintenance fund to cover the district. Before approving the staff's recommendations, some School Board members expressed concerns about using money from the fund and said they were concerned about a potential cost increase for the upcoming renovations at Harborview Elementary School.
The city was scheduled to discuss the proposal today.
