The inaugural ice hockey tournament at the Treadwell Arena in Douglas was a success. Teams from Anchorage, Juneau, Petersburg and the Yukon Territory participated in the tournament last weekend. The Juneau Aces skated to a 3-2 victory on Sunday in the gold medal game against the Anchorage's Play It Again Sports team.
The tournament and awards banquet was enhanced through the generous help of the Nugget Outfitter, Tyler Rental, the Skaters Edge, Western Auto, William Spear Design, Sports North in Whitehorse, the Alaskan Brewery, the Douglas Café, Louie's Douglas Inn and Mike's Place.
The tournament was made possible through the hard work of numerous volunteers and the Juneau Adult Hockey Association. Chris Mertl, Ken Notley (Anchorage) John Bohan, John Ingalls, Claire Geldhof and Val Drummond (Haines Junction) deserve special recognition for their stellar work in pulling off the first ice hockey tournament in Juneau.
The tournament participants all thank the hard working staff at the Treadwell Arena, the hundreds of Juneau residents who came and cheered on the skaters and the entire Juneau community who made the new rink a reality. Hosting an international ice hockey tournament in Alaska's Capital City was a dream come true.
