Posted: Thursday, March 20, 2003

JUNEAU - The Alaska State Museum will conduct a training workshop for volunteers who help interpret Alaska history and natural history for museum visitors. The workshops begin Saturday, March 29, and continues Saturday mornings through April.

The docent training workshops will begin with an informal open house from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 26. Anyone who has an interest in becoming a volunteer at the museum is invited to attend.

This year's training will focus on the technical side of interpretation. Workshop participants will examine artifacts in collection storage as well as exhibits on display. Participants also will meet and learn from some of Alaska's top historians. The season's speakers include Amy Steffian, co-curator of the exhibition "Looking Both Ways," which explores Alutiiq culture, as well as University of Alaska Anchorage Professor Steve Haycox, author of "Alaska: an American Colony."
