Fisherman's Bend gone but not forgotten

Posted: Thursday, March 20, 2008

It was like a blow to the gut, the news that Fisherman's Bend and an attached home were destroyed by fire in the early morning hours of Feb. 9. Thanks to the quick actions of volunteers and career firefighters, the nearby gas tanks didn't explode, despite near-zero temperatures that night.

For me, Fisherman's Bend was an institution in Auke Bay. When I was a kid, it was one of the three pillars of commerce in the neighborhood, along with Horton's Hardware and DeHart's.

Prior to being a store, the building housed the Auke Bay Post Office. Being the last general store as one drove "out the road," Fisherman's Bend was invaluable to many. Who hadn't stopped there to fill a Jerry jug, buy some tackle, a six pack, bait or snacks before a day on the water?

My hope is that the owners are able to recover from this tragedy and rebuild. If not, then to them I say, "Thanks for everything."
