Shannon Avenson has been selected by the Juneau School District as the new principal for Riverbend Elementary School. Avenson is currently a kindergarten through 12th-grade principal at the Northome (Minn.) School, where she has been for six years.
Superintendent Glenn Gelbrich announced the hiring decision Friday.
“We are very fortunate to find a principal with such strong skills in curriculum, communications and leadership,” he said. “It is very clear why both the community and the interview team saw Shannon as the top choice for Riverbend Elementary School.”
“I am thrilled about this opportunity to join the amazing community of Juneau — not only as a principal but also as a parent,” Avenson said. “I look forward to getting to know the staff and families of Riverbend and becoming part of that community.”
In her current position, Avenson is responsible for a variety of duties, ranging from curriculum development and staff training to student interventions and scheduling. She is also the athletic director and head volleyball coach.
Avenson holds a master’s degree in educational administration from St. Cloud (Minn.) State University and a Bachelor of Science from Bemidji (Minn.) State University. Avenson will move to Juneau this summer with her husband and children.
