Earlier this month, Juneau teachers put on a great community-wide celebration of reading called Read Across America. But we couldn't have done it without the help of volunteer readers such as Mayor Sally Smith, Rep. Beth Kerttula, school board members Mary Becker and Daniel Peterson, state Board of Education member Sally Rue, Mendenhall River Principal Diana Gifford, former assemblywoman Rosalee Walker and state Transportation Commissioner Joe Perkins.
Story teller Brett Dillingham lent his time and had the students in stitches with his tales. Thanks are also due to Gastineau School and its principal, Kathi Riemer, who was instrumental in putting the event together, and the Juneau
School District, which also supported the event. Of course, nobody would have known about it if it hadn't been for the Juneau Empire, KTOO and KINY which helped spread the word of our celebration. We can do so much for the children of our community when we all work together! Thank you also to the people who attended the event.
