Craig boys roll on at Class 3A state tournament; Petersburg girls win

Posted: Friday, March 21, 2003

ANCHORAGE - The Craig boys basketball team continued its quest to go from Class 3A state runner-up to champion on Thursday; the Mount Edgecumbe girls very nearly ended another.

Craig beat Delta Junction, 54-47, advancing the Panthers' drive to improve on last year's second-place state finish, while Mount Edgecumbe gave top-ranked and 2002 state runner-up Monroe Catholic a scare, leading much of the game before the Rams pulled in front late for a 38-35 win at the state basketball tournament in Anchorage's Sullivan Arena.

In Thursday's other Class 3A games involving Southeast teams, the Petersburg girls beat Eielson, 54-42, while the Petersburg boys lost to undefeated and defending state champion Valdez, 66-49.

Craig (22-4) and Delta Junction (16-12) started out slow, with the Huskies holding an 11-10 lead after one period. In the second quarter, though, Craig's shots started falling and the Panthers took a 28-22 lead into the half, with many of the starters resting on the bench.

Craig's court leaders - including Ray Douville, Freddy Hamilton and Jordan Savage - returned in the second half to guide the Panthers to the win. Craig led by just three, 48-45, with 2:10 left to go in the game, but the Panthers went on a 6-0 run to secure the win.

"I think (it was) going to our bench early and going with some fresh guys," Craig coach James Carle said of breaking out of the first-quarter doldrums. "Then the veterans came in through in the end."

Craig moves on to play Heritage Christian at 3:45 p.m. today., after the Eagles beat Bethel, 39-27, on Thursday.

Douville led Craig with 21 points, while Hamilton and Savage added 10 apiece.

The Mount Edgecumbe girls stunned Monroe by taking a 17-14 lead at the half, and were up 28-25 after three quarters. But as the Braves fell apart at the charity stripe and made some key turnovers, the Rams pulled ahead with five minutes to play and held on for the win. A 3-point try at the buzzer fell short for the Braves.

"The girls played hard; they gave everything they had," Braves coach Rich Calkins said. "(But) bottom line, (it was) 1-for-13 shooting from the line" that led to the loss.

Ella Morris and Ellie Jackson led Mount Edgecumbe with 10 points apiece.

Mount Edgecumbe next faces Seward at 1 p.m. today after the Seahawks lost to Barrow, 54-47.

The Petersburg girls, looking to improve on last year's fourth-place finish at state, rolled to a 20-8 lead after one quarter and never looked back, staying even with Eielson the rest of the game.

Kayleigh Short poured in 18 points to lead the Vikings as Petersburg shot better than 47 percent from the field, while Eielson shot less than 23 percent.

Petersburg now faces defending state champion Nikiski at 7:05 p.m. tonight, after Nikiski beat Kotzebue, 58-35, on Thursday.

The Petersburg boys hung tough with Valdez in the first half and held a 44-42 lead well into the third quarter before the Buccaneers capitalized on turnovers and their size advantage.

Jon Randrup and Kyle Skinner led the Vikings with 10 points apiece. Petersburg played Anchorage Christian at 9:45 a.m. today, after Anchorage Christian lost to Barrow on Thursday, 54-41.
