The 58th edition of the Juneau Lions Club's Gold Medal Basketball Tournament opens today at the Juneau-Douglas High School main gym.
The Mighty B Bracket and Legendary C Bracket will get things started, with the Mighty A Bracket and the Women's Bracket starting play later in the week.
In today's Mighty B Bracket action, Klawock takes on Kake Tlingit Heat at 11 a.m., Hydaburg plays the defending champion Haines Merchants at 2 p.m., Yakutat ANB plays Huna Totem at 5:30 p.m. and the Metlakatla Merchants play Angoon ANB at 9 p.m.
In the Legendary C Bracket today, the Juneau Green Team takes on the Klukwan Chilkats at 9:30 a.m., the defending champion Klawock Old Totems play Angoon at 12:30 p.m., Yakutat plays Kake ANB at 4 p.m., and the Huna Totem Old-Timers take on Metlakatla at 7:30 p.m.
The Women's Bracket tips off on Monday with a revamped format featuring village teams this year and city/region teams next year.
In Monday's first round, Angoon Kwaan plays the Metlakatla Women at 12:30 p.m., while Mystery Team (a team of local Native women) takes on Huna ANS at 2 p.m. On Tuesday, Kake KWBA plays the Angoon-Metlakatla winner at 12:30 p.m. and Yakutat ANS plays the Mystery Team-Huna winner at 2 p.m.
The Mighty A Bracket opens play on Wednesday, with the Marlintini's Arctic Lights of Juneau taking on Sitka ANB/ANS at 11 a.m. and the All-Stars playing Ketchikan at 2 p.m.
This year there will be four middle school brackets - two for boys and two for girls - and play in the middle school tournament opens Wednesday at the Marie Drake gym. Game times for the middle school tournament will be posted in the Sports In Juneau listings on the Scoreboard on Page B2 later this week.
The Gold Medal Basketball Tournament is a fund-raiser for the Juneau Lions Club's college scholarship program, disabled ski program and other ventures.
