Slow starts doom Vikings

Top-ranked Petersburg finishes fifth after losing two games

Posted: Sunday, March 21, 2004

ANCHORAGE - Slow starts doomed the top-ranked Petersburg girls basketball team as the Vikings bowed out of the Class 3A state tournament with a pair of losses.

The Vikings scored just two points in the first quarter of Friday's semifinal and eventually fell to Monroe Catholic 48-33. In Saturday's third-fifth place game, Petersburg lost to Barrow 55-43.

"We got up here and had trouble getting our shots to fall," said Petersburg senior Kayleigh Short, who led the Vikings with 12 points on Friday and 16 points on Saturday. "We did everything we could, but our legs weren't under us."

On Friday, Monroe Catholic took a 15-2 lead after the first quarter and was up 32-15 at the half. Petersburg shot less than 20 percent from the field in the game and was unable to make a run in the second half.

Senior Britni Birchell added eight points and seven rebounds for Petersburg (22-4). Leah Stepovich scored 21 points to lead the Rams, who beat Valdez 50-27 in Saturday night's championship game for their first title since 1988.

Barrow freshman Jesstinna "Piggy" Pili led the way for the Whalers in Saturday's game with 17 points and 13 rebounds. Barrow led 31-17 at the half.

Martina Leavitt added 15 points and eight rebounds for Barrow, which had 19 steals as a team.

Senior Autumn Streuli added seven points and seven rebounds for the Vikings. Birchell scored five points and grabbed 10 rebounds, and senior Katrina Berg scored seven points and blocked four shots.

The loss marked the last high school game for Petersburg's talented senior class, which also included Tessa Bergmann.

"It's incredible, it's once-in-a-lifetime," Short said of being on the court as part of the senior quintet.

Short said basketball gave her "a lot of great friendships and a lot of great memories.

"It's been a great four years."

Seward 63, Mount Edgecumbe 37

The second-ranked Seahawks - upset by Valdez in the first round - took out their frustration on the Braves on Friday in a consolation-bracket game.

Breanna Bardarson scored 22 points and snared seven steals, and three other Seward players added eight apiece as the Seahawks built a 37-26 halftime lead, and went on a 26-11 run over the final two periods.

Mount Edgecumbe senior Bunky Keyes led the Braves with 19 points and four steals, while junior Ellie Jackson scored eight points and grabbed five rebounds.

The Braves were troubled by turnovers, with 26 in the game to Seward's 17. Mount Edgecumbe, which went two-and-out at the state tourney, finished the year with a 13-13 record.
