Huna Totem Tribe cruises to victory in C Bracket

Posted: Monday, March 21, 2005

The defending C Bracket champion Huna Totem Tribe gained momentum for a repeat Sunday in the opening round of the 59th Annual Gold Medal Basketball Tournament.

The Tribe routed Juneau ANB Masters 90-47, and solidified themselves as the team to beat in the bracket.

"It's good to get the bugs out, you know, get everything worked out," said Louie White, who scored nine points for Huna. "It wasn't a real hard fought victory, but it's good to get everything going, get the guys together."

In Sunday's other C Bracket games, the Klukwan Warriors defeated the Juneau Southeast Native Veterans 80-60, the Juneau Hangar Green Team beat the Klukwan Chilkats 84-37, and Kake LAB beat Angoon 79-60.

Today's winners bracket matchups are the Klukwan Warriors against Huna Totem Tribe at 6 p.m., and the Juneau Hangar Green Team against Kake LAB at 7:30 p.m.

In Sunday's Huna Totem Tribe-Juneau ANB Masters game, Juneau put the opening points on the board after Ken Kreitzer hit a 3-point shot, but that would be the ANB Masters' only lead of the game. Greg Garcia answered right back for Huna with a 3-pointer, which began an 11-0 run for the Tribe and set the tempo for the remainder of the game.

Juneau narrowed the lead with the strong inside play of Kreitzer and the sharp shooting of Don Nowlin, but aggressive defense and savvy ball movement gave Huna a 47-20 lead at halftime.

"It was fun. We're just starting to get together," said White. "We have like four new guys on our roster so we were just trying to get up the tempo. That's our style."

Kreitzer said the Juneau ANB Masters are a "rag-tag-team" that was thrown together at the last minute.

"I think we'll do a lot better next game, but this game was just for us to get to know each other," he said. "I think we played the best team in the C Bracket, no doubt about it. So even if we would have played our best, for coming out the first time I think they still would have beat us. But we'll give them a run for their money if we meet them again."

Huna appeared to start and play a younger and better-conditioned team that played more physical basketball than Juneau.

"Well, if you look at the ages they probably average ten, maybe 15 years younger than us so we wanted to slow the ball down on them, but those guys were pretty hyped for it being the first game and they just ran away with it," Kreitzer said. "They took it to us and every time we slowed the ball down they used their energy on defense."

"They played with a lot of spirit," White said. "Some guys are older than others, you know. The mind is willing but the body just won't go. But they're really classy. I've played against a lot of them for a lot of years. They're very good sportsmen."

Huna kept up the intensity going into the second half. Driven by the strong play of Garcia, who led all scorers with 23 points, Huna kept increasing its lead.

Juneau began to find a rhythm several minutes into the second half and started making more shots. Fred Wigg Jr. gave Juneau a boost of confidence with his long-range accuracy, making three 3-point shots in the closing minutes of the game, but Huna's aggressive style of play was too much for them to handle.

"We passed a lot better in the second half. We just looked a little sharper," said Kreitzer. "But, you know, for us just coming together at the last minute to try to put something together and have some fun, I think we did all right."

Kreitzer said he thinks Huna has a good chance to win the C Bracket if they continue to play as they did in the opening round.

Showalter Martin scored 12 points for Huna, Pete Schneeberger scored 11 points, and John Martin Jr. added eight points.

Kreitzer and Wigg each scored 14 points for Juneau and Nowlin scored 11 points.
