Basketball not the only competition at Region V

Sound off on the important issues at

News flash! There were actually other Juneau-Douglas High School participants at the Region V Basketball Tournament, in addition to our awesome basketball teams. The Crimson Bears' dance team competed in a separate event on Feb. 11 at Ketchikan High Schooland received the highest rating possible. They were the only dance/drill team rated a "Superior" at the event. The Crimson Bears' cheer squad won first place in the Class 4A cheer competition. The JDHS pep band had several musicians selected for the All-Star Pep Band.

Where was the Juneau Empire when it came time to report this news? For years, a reporter and photographer have attended the Dance/Drill Adjudication and Cheerleading Exhibition, but not this year. We're all very proud of our basketball teams, and of course the Region V Tournament wouldn't exist without them. But what makes Southeast Alaska's regional tournament very special, is the fact that dance, cheer and pep band are such a big part of the event. You don't see that in other parts of the state. I'm sorry that wasn't proudly recognized in the Juneau Empire.

I congratulate the sports editor and staff for striving to make local coverage a priority. I have enjoyed reading articles all year long about all the different sports, and I know it takes a lot of effort to provide that coverage. But I was disappointed this time. Congratulations to all of the participants at the Region V Tournament. I do mean all of you.
