The late Gov. William Egan attends a Cabinet meeting at the Capitol in 1974. Egan, a Democrat born in Valdez, was the state's first governor. He was known for his amazing memory, common touch and working around the clock at the Capitol. Old-timers remember the former chief executive walking the streets of Juneau to places such as the City Cafe to eat and meet people. He died in 1984. The next year the Alaska Legislature designated Oct. 8 William A. Egan Day.
