Good day for Hoonah in the loser's bracket
All three Hoonah teams won their elimination games Thursday in the Juneau Lions Club Gold Medal Tournament at the Juneau-Douglas High School gym.
In the Mighty B Bracket, Hoonah won its third straight game as it eliminated Metlakatka 110-93.
Hoonah raced to a 58-43 lead and then turned on the jets to finish its opponent. The team made 12 3-point shots in the win.
Travis Dybdahl led Hoonah with a game-high 39 points. He had two 3-pointers and made 10 of 12 free throws.
Mike Schneeberger added four 3-pointers and finished with 17 points and David Lindoff scored 14 points in the win. Lucas Johnson had 10 points, Devin Moretz tallied eight points while James Wilson and D.J. Lindstrom scored seven points each in the win.
Walter Washington and Sam Willard scored four points each for Hoonah.
Richie Hayward led Metlakatla with 26 points while Bryan Hayward scored 22 points.
Mike Henderson had 18 points, Anthony Gogert tallied 14 points, Pat Cook had seven points, Craig Kitka scored four points, and Tre' Ilasa chipped in two points in defeat.
Hoonah will play either Angoon or Haines Merchants at 9 p.m. tonight for the right to play for the championship. The Mighty B Bracket title game will take place at 8 p.m. Saturday.
MIGHTY B BRACKET
Haines Merchants 84, Angoon 81
Angoon put Haines Merchants to the test last Thursday night, but Haines prevailed and earned the opportunity to defend its Mighty B Bracket title.
Haines led 38-33 at halftime against Angoon.
Brian Friske poured in 20 points in the win while Andrew Friske added 17 points. Tyler Healy totaled 15 points, Ben Egolf posted 12 points, Jason Shull and Jesse McGraw scored seven points each while Norman Zura had six points for Haines.
Curtis Lane led Angoon with 29 points while Stan Johnson Jr. posted 18 points. Guy Hunter scored 10 points, Damien Long had nine points, Levi Johnson Sr. and Bailey Johnson scored six points each while Kevin Mitchell had three points in the loss.
Angoon will play Hoonah at 9 p.m. tonight for the right to play Haines in the final.
LEGENDARY C BRACKET
Huna Totem 75, Angoon 65
The two teams battled throughout the game, but Huna Totem had enough left to outlast the Angoon squad.
Huna Totem led 39-36 at halftime.
Garvin Martin led Huna with 17 points, while Albert Hinchman and Showalter Martin scored 16 points each. Kamal Lindoff tallied 11 points, Mike Mills had six points, Andy Gray scored five points, and Lance Geise chipped in four points in the win.
For Angoon, Frank Jack III made seven 3-pointers en route to a game-high 32 points.
Steve Jack had 10 points, DeAndre King tallied eight points, Jim Woodbury and Jay Booth scored four points each, Jeff Duncan hit a 3-pointer while Harold Houston and Randy Gamble posted two points each in defeat.
Huna Totem will play Klukwan at 7:30 p.m. tonight in the loser's bracket final. The winner will play Kake at 6 p.m. Saturday for the championship.
MASTER'S BRACKET
Huna Totem Masters 87, Sitka Moose 80
Huna Totem Masters held off a late charge to advance to the loser's bracket final on Thursday.
Huna led 45-36 at the half and held on for the win.
Louie White Sr. scored a game-high 39 points while Jack Lee added 22 points in the win. Bill Wolfe Jr. had nine points, Alan Fisher scored seven points while Leon Cain and Pete Schneeberger had four points each.
Also for Huna, Dan Smith had two points.
Ned Chapman led Sitka 17 points while Scott Calhoun had 16 points and Norm Staton and Steve Edenshaw scored 13 points each.
George Erickson posted nine points and Bill Trivitt scored six points in defeat.
Huna will face Yakutat at 6 p.m. tonight in the loser's bracket final. The winner will play Klukwan at 4 p.m. Saturday for the title.
WEDNESDAY'S LATE GAME
MIGHTY B BRACKET
Hoonah 101, Yakutat 64
Hoonah moved on in the tournament with a win over Yakutat late Wednesday night.
Travis Dybdahl led Hoonah with 22 points. He scored all of them in the first half.
Mike Schneeberger had 18 points, Jeremy Johnson and David Lindoff had eight points each, Walter Washington and Sam Willard had six points each while D.J. Lindstrom tallied five points in the win.
Devin Moretz, James Wilson and Adam Lee also scored in the win.
For Yakutat, Jay Sin had a game-high 26 points while Ben Dunbar posted 12 points. Sam Ferguson scored 11 points, Timmie Brown had 10 points and Russell Raney had five points in defeat.
