Posted: Friday, March 22, 2002

Raymond Douville scored 23 points and grabbed 12 rebounds as the Craig High School boys basketball team upset undefeated and top-ranked Barrow 70-68 Friday night, earning a spot in the Class 3A state basketball tournament championship game at 5 p.m. Saturday night at Anchorage's Sullivan Arena.

Freddy Hamilton added 19 points and Ryan Savage chipped in 15 points and eight rebounds for the Panthers, who entered the state tournament with a sub-.500 record. Craig (13-13 overall) won the Region V-Class 3A championship to earn its first trip to state since moving up to Class 3A about eight years ago.

Jack Frantz scored 25 points and grabbed seven rebounds to lead Barrow, which fell to 25-1 on the season. Robert Nageak added 15 points and eight assists, while Dustin Voss scored 12 points for the Whalers.

With the victory, Craig will play the Valdez Buccaneers in Saturday's title game. Valdez is trying to send retiring coach Dan Eide out with his second state title, but needed a fourth-quarter rally to knock off the Metlakatla Chiefs 66-61.

Carl Arts scored 26 points and Jeremy Casillas added 23 to lead the Buccaneers, who trailed 51-41 entering the fourth quarter. Eide, who coached Valdez to the 1988 Class 3A state title, is retiring at the end of this season and has won more than 500 games in his 20 years at the school.

Chris Bryant scored 23 points to lead Metlakatla (13-12), while Chevy Hayward added 13 and John Mackie scored nine. The Chiefs will play Valdez at 11:10 a.m. Saturday in the boys Class 3A third-fifth place game.

In girls Class 3A action involving Southeast teams, the Petersburg Vikings rallied in the fourth quarter to eliminate the Barrow Whalers with a 54-50 victory in a consolation bracket game Friday morning.

Petersburg trailed 28-16 at halftime and 36-30 at the end of the third quarter before outscoring Barrow 24-14 in the fourth period. Karna Williams scored 15 points to lead the Vikings (15-10), while Kayleigh Short added 11 and Britni Birchell had nine points.

Martina Leavitt scored 24 points to lead Barrow, which also had eight points from Kristine Contrades. The Whalers had their season end with the loss.

While Petersburg survived on Friday, Region V-Class 3A champion Mount Edgecumbe was eliminated by the Kotzebue Huskies, 52-50, in another consolation bracket game.

The Braves led 29-15 at halftime and 40-38 at the end of the third quarter, but Kotzebue was able to pull out the victory. Melanie Beans scored 22 points to lead Mount Edgecumbe (19-8), while Prema Warren added 11 points.

Mildred Sampson and Evelyn Conwell both scored 15 points to lead Kotzebue, which is coached by former Juneau resident Jake Stoops. Kotzebue and Petersburg will play at 8 a.m. Saturday in the fourth-sixth place game of the Class 3A girls tournament.
