Juneau Hangar Green Team hangs on to beat Kake LAB

Green Team lets leads slip away, but wins in C Bracket

Posted: Tuesday, March 22, 2005

The Juneau Hangar Green Team dug a deep hole for Kake LAB, but Kake almost was able to climb out of it during Juneau's 85-80 victory Monday in C Bracket winners' bracket action in the 59th Annual Gold Medal Basketball Tournament at Juneau-Douglas High School.

Juneau went on a 20-0 run early in the game and led by 21 midway through the first half. But Kake switched from a zone to a man-to-man defense and started chipping back. Kake closed to within 11 points, 45-34, at halftime, and even took a 53-52 lead midway through the second half.

After a couple of lead swaps, Juneau went on a 10-0 run for a 69-58 lead and appeared to have the game back in hand. But Kake had one last run, closing the margin to 76-75 and 78-77 before Juneau hit seven of its eight free throws down the stretch to seal the victory.

"We did a lot with ball movement in the first five minutes," said Juneau's Kevin Casperson, who scored 32 points and scored 10 of Juneau's points in the 20-0 run. "I was more impressed by Kake's ability to get back in the game."

Kip Howard opened the game with a basket to give Kake a 2-0 lead, but then it was all Juneau as the Green Team exploited Kake's zone. Casperson hit three 3-pointers, including one where he was fouled and landed on his butt, and Ethan Billings also hit a trey during Juneau's 20-0 run.

The run finally ended when Wayne Friday hit a bucket with 13:22 left in the half to make it 20-4. But Steve Brandner scored on a tip-in and Billings hit another 3-pointer to put Juneau up 25-4, and it appeared a rout was in progress. Instead, it was the starting point for Kake's rally.

"We knew they'd make a run," said Billings, who scored 23 points. "They hadn't shot very well, and it was a combination of us getting tired and them making the run. They started making their shots."

"We'd been off four or five weeks," Juneau's John Garvey said. "And Wayne Friday was unbelievable. We went into a stall too early."

After trailing by 21 twice (also at 27-6), Kake started chipping away at the lead. Juneau dominated Kake in the paint, with Brandner, Garvey, Phil Paramore and Greg Huebschen all being bigger than Kake's largest player. But Friday hit two 3-pointers while Kip Howard and Willis Cavanaugh also made treys and Kake was able to pull within single digits twice before the end of the half.

Howard and Friday scored the first seven points of the second half to bring Kake within four points, at 45-41. After Juneau made a couple of scores, for a 51-42 lead, Kake went on an 11-1 run to take a 53-52 lead on a pair of free throws by Myron Martin.

"We started out in a zone and switched to man and got back on defense," said Friday, who led Kake with 25 points. "They're pretty big and physical, and it's tough to get around their screens. It's a long way around them, and it takes a lot of work to get around."

The teams swapped leads and Juneau led 59-58 when it the Green Team went on a 10-0 run to regain control of the game. But Kake had one last shot and closed the margin to one, 76-75, on a Cavanaugh 3-pointer. From there, Juneau made its free throws, hitting nine of its final 10 shots over the last two minutes after starting the game with a 10-for-21 shooting effort.

"It was a big win for us, a team win with our big men and our outside shooting," Casperson said. "We're happy because we get two days off."

"We're going to be back," Friday said. "We got tired. It's hard to come back, but we knew we were never out of the game."

The Juneau Hangar Green Team will play the defending C Bracket champion Huna Totem Tribe in Thursday's 7:30 p.m. championship bracket semifinal.
