WRANGELL - Are you tired of weight-loss diets that don't work? Are you a woman who wants to learn about a fun, effective way to improve your health and wellness, without being a slave to the scale? Then the WISE At Every Size program may be for you.

The SouthEast Alaska Regional Health Consortium WISEWOMAN program is sponsoring WISE At Every Size classes for women in Wrangell. The six classes take place from 3-5 p.m. every other Saturday starting March 28 at the SNO Building, 325 Front St., in Wrangell. The classes will be led by Tammi Meissner and Vicki Martin. The registration deadline is Monday, March 23.

WISE At Every Size is a non-dieting approach to health and wellness. The classes are open to all adult women and they focus on listening to your body's messages of hunger and fullness, finding ways to get joyful movement and having a positive body image. Research has shown that this approach can reduce blood pressure, cholesterol and blood glucose readings, while improving overall fitness. Women who complete the program requirements will earn a $50 gift certificate to use either at Angerman's Store in Wrangell, for a pair of the new Nike Air Native N7 shoes from the SEARHC Safety Shop, or for items from the Junonia catalog for active women size 14-plus (

More than 100 women in Southeast Alaska have completed the WISE At Every Size program since the first round of classes started in January 2008, and another 80-plus women currently are enrolled in classes. One of the first students was Sharon McIndoo, of Sitka, and Angoon, who said WISE At Every Size "is a great program. It taught me about intuitive eating, and that every 'body' has different fitness levels, no matter what we look like on the outside. I learned to get joyful movement into my daily routine and I enjoy being a role model."

In addition to the classes in Wrangell, there are WISE At Every Size classes being taught this winter in several other Southeast communities.
