Elementary, middle, and high school age students are invited to an upcoming Discovery Day at Eaglecrest Ski Area on Friday, March 25. The event is hosted by Discovery Southest.
Participants will be able to choose between an animal tracking session on snowshoes, or a backcountry skills and avalanche awareness session in partnership with the Eaglecrest Ski Patrol, Juneau Mountain Rescue and the Southeast Alaska Avalanche Center. Participants who register for the backcountry skills and avalanche awareness session must be able to comfortably ski or snowboard down the west side of the mountain and have their own ski or snowboard gear and lift ticket or pass. Beacons, shovels and probes, as well as kicker skins, will be provided. Snowshoes will be provided for the tracking group. Participants will have the opportunity to practice search and rescue skills at the Easy Searcher Beacon Park.
Both sessions begin at 9:30 a.m. and end at 3 p.m. Check in will be at the Discovery Southeast educational table on the second floor of the lodge. Please bring a sack lunch, snacks and water in a backpack. Space is limited, and weather-appropriate clothing is necessary.
At the end of the day, Discovery Southeast will also host a free family snowshoe from 3:30-4:30 p.m.�Limited snowshoes will be available. Discover the Humpy snowshoe trail and enjoy making snow cones or ice cream along the way.
