Going to the Academy Awards in Juneau

JUNEAU - The Juneau Arts and Humanities Council will roll out the red carpet Sunday for the second annual Academy Awards Gala.

The event is a benefit for the arts council's scholarship program. Doors open at 6 p.m., and the program starts at 6:30 p.m. at Centennial Hall.

``It's got the glamour and elegance and fun of the real Academy Awards ceremony. It's also fun and relaxed, because we're watching the awards on the big screen with our friends,'' said arts council director Sybil Davis.

The event includes live music, hors d'oeuvres, and faux voting for the best films in a contest with prizes.

``We're encouraging people to dress in Hollywood attire, or in costume as a Hollywood character,'' Davis said.

Tickets to the benefit are $50, available at the arts council.

Canadian musicians play in Juneau

JUNEAU - Singer and songwriter Manfred Janssen and Barbara Chamberlin from Whitehorse, Yukon Territory, will perform three times in Juneau this weekend.

The duo will play a set of Janssen's original music at 7 p.m. Friday at the Myriad Cafe, part of Alaska Folk Festival's Music at the Myriad series. Juneau pianist and songwriter Rory Merritt Stitt will follow with a set of his original music at 8 p.m.

Janssen and Chamberlin will play from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. Friday and Saturday at The Alaskan Bar. They'll be joined there by Juneau drummer Clay Good and bassist Adrianne Minne. The Alaskan set will feature blues and rock music.

Janssen, 50, has been a musician most of his life. He grew up in Toronto, lived in Vancouver, British Columbia, and settled in Whitehorse in 1977. A lead guitarist, singer and harmonica player, he said he favors R and B and blues.

He played in the acoustic group Two Rivers, which has performed in Juneau, and in the blues-rock group Agents of Chaos, which worked in Whitehorse for a number of years.

Chamberlin plays the keyboard and sings. Janssen will feature music from his new CD, ``Familiar Ground.''

Admission to the Myriad concert is $5. There's no cover at the Alaskan.
