2005 JIV and JV Alpine Skiing State Championships - Eaglecrest Ski Area and the Juneau Ski Club will host this state meet for skiers ages 9-12, with a super-G race on Friday, a giant slalom race on Saturday and a slalom race on Sunday. Tentative race schedules call for first runs at 10 a.m. and second runs at 1 p.m. each day. Glacier 10K and 1-Mile Run/Walk: Race-day registration starts at 9 a.m. for a 10 a.m. race start at the Mendenhall Glacier Visitors' Center parking lot. This year's event, which supports the Juneau-Douglas High School track and field team, includes T-shirts for the first 120 entrants, the new 1-mile walk and a citywide elementary school mile championship. Pre-register at JRC/The Alaska Club, Foggy Mountain Shop or Nugget Alaskan Outfitter for $15 adults/$10 kids. Race-day registration is $18 adults/$11 kids. Youth track and field training camp - The Juneau-Douglas High School track and field team will conduct a training camp for kids in grades 2-8 on Thursday, March 24, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The camp will start at the Glacier Valley Elementary School gym, and will guide participants through fun and motivating techniques important to a variety of track and field discliplines. Ultimate Frisbee video highlights show - The University of Alaska Southeast Ultimate Frisbee Club, Ultimate Players of Southeast Alaska and VC Ultimate will host two showings of video highlights from the 2004 Ultimate Frisbee Championship Tournaments. Showings will be at on Monday, March 28, at 7 p.m. at the UAS Student Activities Center, and on Thursday, March 31, at 7 p.m. at Pizzeria Roma. Fly Fishing 101 class - Fly Fishing 101 will be offered on Tuesday and Thursday, March 29 and 31, from 7-9 p.m. at Floyd Dryden Middle School. The class has been taught for the past 10 years and is suggested for beginners wishing to learn enough to pursue the sport. Juneau Archery Club youth shooting - Archery shooting is held on Friday nights, with sessions at 6 p.m., 7 p.m. and 8 p.m. Space is limited and is available on a first-come, first-served basis. ADF&G Indoor Shooting Range closure - Due to a turnover of staff at the Alaska Department of Fish and Game's indoor shooting range, the range has suspended normal public shooting hours. The department's Division of Wildlife Conservation is working to fill staff vacancies and hopes to reopen the range to public shooting in a few weeks. Juneau Community Schools open gyms - Basketball, volleyball and soccer open gyms for adults are available several times a week. Basketball and volleyball open gyms are held Fridays and Sundays from 7-9 p.m. at Dzantik'i Heeni Middle School. Soccer open gyms are held Sundays from 6:45-8:45 p.m. at Floyd Dryden Middle School. Basketball/volleyball court rentals available - The Juneau Community Schools program has basketball/volleyball court rental times available from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturdays at Dzantik'i Heeni Middle School. Juneau Department of Parks and Recreation Wednesday and Saturday hikes - For updates on locations of Wednesday and Saturday group hikes, call the Juneau Parks and Recreation Hikes Hotline. Always remember to bring plenty of food and water, wear warm layers of clothing and proper footwear for the hike. No dogs or firearms are allowed. Wednesday hikes are limited to hikers 18 years of age or older. Saturday hikes are open to families, and children must be accompanied by an adult.
