Empire seeks photos of record-breaking winter snowfall

The winter of 2007 is one that will be talked about for years to come. Send us your photos that document the record snowfall and this memorable weather.

We're looking for pictures that show just how deep the snow piled up, as well as photos of people clearing snow, playing in snow, making art out of snow and trying to get through the snow.

Alaska Health Fair distributes blood test gift certificates

The Alaska Health Fair was pleased to receive a grant from the Alaska Kidney Foundation to provide gift certificates to subsidize the cost of our chemistry/hematology blood test for people who are unable to afford the $40 charge for the blood test or are at risk for kidney disease.

The gift certificates are to be redeemed from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. April 6 and 7 at the Juneau Public Health Fair at Centennial Hall.

Applications available for Village Health Occupations Program

The SouthEast Alaska Regional Health Consortium is accepting applications for high school students to participate in the Ethel Lund Village Health Occupations Program. SEARHC selects 12 students interested in the health field to visit Mount Edgecumbe Hospital in Sitka to learn about different health careers and educational requirements.

This year's VHOP session is scheduled for April 30 through May 4, with travel dates being April 29 and May 5. Students who are selected to participate receive assistance to cover travel costs to and from Sitka, housing, meals and some evening entertainment.

The deadline for applications is April 7. Applications are available at high school offices, at local village corporations or by going to and clicking on the link marked "Student Info" and then the link for the VHOP Program.

Alaskan and Proud holds fundraiser for Twin Lakes playground

Alaskan and Proud market is holding a benefit for the Twin Lakes playground on Friday, March 30, at Alaskan and Proud.

Alaskan and Proud will donate ten percent of purchases, less tobacco products and sales tax, to purchase equipment for the Twin Lakes playground.
