House Finance holds scholarship hearing

Posted: Tuesday, March 23, 2010

JUNEAU - A committee with significant say over a crucial part of Gov. Sean Parnell's merit scholarship bill - the money - is taking its first shot at the proposal.

Questions posed by House Finance Committee members Monday focused largely on policy. They touched on issues, and concerns, that have been raised as the bill's moved through the process - from access for rural students to rigorous educational offerings, financial need and residency criteria.

Separately, the Senate education committee hopes to pass its version of a scholarship bill on to Senate Finance by midweek. Finance committees represent a last stop for bills before floor votes.

Parnell has called for $400 million to act as an endowment for in-state tuition or professional training.

Lawmakers are set to adjourn next month.
