Cavs rally to defeat the Nets

Boozer scores 12 points, grabs eight rebounds in game

CLEVELAND - Something about traveling to Cleveland brings out the worst in the New Jersey Nets.

Zydrunas Ilgauskas scored 29 points to help the Cavaliers overcome an early 13-point deficit and defeated the Nets 93-88 Sunday night.

Cleveland snapped a three-game losing streak and won for just the third time in 19 games - with two of those victories coming at home against New Jersey.

The Nets' lead over Philadelphia in the Atlantic Division was cut to a half-game.

"We are just making it hard on ourselves," Jason Kidd said. "We didn't shoot well in the second half and didn't get stops, either."

Ilgauskas, who had been criticized by Nets forward Kenyon Martin after being selected to the All-Star team, shot 13-for-21.

"I forgot about that stuff," Ilgauskas said of Martin's comments. "We were down early, but kept battling. My 15 points in the first quarter kept us in the game."

Rookie power forward Carlos Boozer, a 1999 Juneau-Douglas High School graduate, scored 12 points, grabbed eight rebounds, dished out three assists and blocked two shots for the Cavaliers.

Kidd scored 21 points to lead the Nets, but committed a key turnover and missed a free throw in the final 16 seconds.

The Nets shot 32 percent in the second half and lost for the 10th time in 15 games.

Cleveland led 85-80, but failed to score for 4:44 as the Nets tied the score. Ricky Davis snapped the drought with a 14-foot jumper to put the Cavaliers ahead to stay, 87-85 with 1:46 remaining.

"Ricky didn't play well tonight, yet he made a huge shot when we needed a bucket," Cavs coach Keith Smart said.

Davis entered the game averaging 20.3 points, but scored just four on 2-for-6 shooting. He also had seven turnovers.

Ilgauskas made it 89-85 on a drive 40 seconds later before Kidd hit two free throws.

Davis tossed an airball from 15 feet as the shot clock was about to expire, but Kidd gave the ball right back by dribbling it off his foot and out of bounds with 15.6 seconds to play.

Two free throws by Smush Parker, who finished with 15 points, extended Cleveland's lead to 91-87 with 13 seconds left.

Kidd made the first of two free throws with 8.7 seconds left and when the rebound was fumbled away by Cleveland, got the ball and forced a 3-pointer from the corner that missed.

Jumaine Jones hit two free throws with 3.7 seconds left to close the scoring.

The Cavs improved to 2-48 in games in which they trailed by 10 or more points. Cleveland, with a league-worst record of 13-56, needs three wins in the final 13 games to avoid tying the franchise's worst mark of 15-67 set in their inaugural season of 1970-71 and matched in 1981-82.

"These last games are our playoff season," Parker said. "A lot of teams we face right now need to win to keep their spot in the playoffs.

"We came out with the intent of not rolling over for these guys."

Warriors 113, Wizards 107

At Oakland, Calif., Gilbert Arenas scored a career-high 41 points and Antawn Jamison added 37 points and 11 rebounds as Golden State spoiled Michael Jordan's last game in Oakland.

Jordan missed two shots down the stretch, committed a turnover with 22 seconds left and was held scoreless on 0-for-4 shooting in the fourth quarter. He finished with 24 points and five rebounds before a sellout crowd of 20,149.

Kings 109, Rockets 108

At Sacramento, Calif., Chris Webber scored 24 points, and Houston's Steve Francis missed a long 3-pointer at the buzzer.

Francis had 38 points and nine assists in a virtuoso performance.

Webber made two big shots in the closing minutes, but he missed two free throws with 5.1 seconds left - nearly allowing the Rockets to steal a win in the NBA's toughest road arena.

76ers 112, Raptors 95

At Toronto, Allen Iverson scored 32 points as Philadelphia ended a two-game losing streak.

Iverson, the league's No. 3 scorer, recovered from two subpar games - he had just five points in Thursday's loss to Detroit and went 9-for-27 from the field in Friday's loss to Atlanta - to go 14-for-25 from the field. He added seven assists and five steals.

Vince Carter had 22 points on 10-for-13 shooting for the lottery-bound Raptors, who have lost eight of nine.

Magic 96, Heat 74

At Miami, Tracy McGrady made a career-high seven 3-pointers and scored 37 points to help Orlando win its fourth in a row.

McGrady scored 21 in the first quarter and finished 15-of-27 from the field to go along with seven rebounds and five assists, helping the Magic to their eighth win in 11 games.

McGrady played only 32 minutes, sitting out the entire fourth quarter.

Pistons 105, Bulls 82

At Auburn Hills, Mich., Richard Hamilton scored 26 points and Ben Wallace pulled down 20 rebounds as the Pistons improved to 3-0 against the Bulls this season.

The win increased Detroit's Central Division lead to 3 1/2 games over idle Indiana.

Spurs 98. Lakers 89

At San Antonio, Tim Duncan had 27 points and Tony Parker scored 16 of his 18 points in the second half as San Antonio beat Los Angeles for a four-game regular-season sweep of the Lakers.

San Antonio took control by making 10 of 15 shots in the third quarter. The Spurs led by as many as 19 points in the quarter as Los Angeles shot 6-for-31.

Shaquille O'Neal had 32 points and 12 rebounds and Kobe Bryant added 31 points for the Lakers.
