NEW CALENDAR ITEMS

• ORCA Ski-A-Thon - The ORCA Ski-A-Thon will be held at Eaglecrest Ski Area on Saturday, March 27. Participants gather pledges and sponsorships to benefit ORCA, Outdoor Recreation and Community Access. For more information or to support the event, call 586-0104 or stop by the ORCA table upstairs in the lodge on March 27.

• "You Go Girl" snowboard day for women - Eaglecrest Ski Area will host a day of activities for women snowboarders of all abilities on Saturday, April 3. The all-day workshop, including lunch, costs $50. Info: Eaglecrest Ski Area, 790-2001.

• Juneau Adult Hockey Association - Juneau Aces vs. Juneau Young Guns: The third game in a series of youth hockey fund-raisers between these two teams takes place at 10:45 a.m. at Treadwell Arena. • 2004 Herb Jaenicke Memorial Badminton Tournament - This tournament takes place Friday through Sunday, March 26-28, at the Mendenhall Valley location of JRC-The Racquet Club. The deadline to enter this tournament is Monday, March 22. This tournament is open to players of all skill levels. Entry fee includes a tournament t-shirt, game birdies, court time and prizes for the top two finishers in each division. Entry fees are $25 (plus tax for all fees) for JRC-The Alaska Club members, $30 for non-members and $15 for juniors (age younger than 13). • Buckwheat Ski Classic - Registration was due March 15 for this annual event, which takes place in Skagway on Saturday, March 27. Events include 10-kilometer, 25K and 50K ski races, a 5K kids' race and a 5K snowshoe sprint. Info: Foggy Mountain Shop, 586-6780, or on the Web at http://www.skagwaynews.com.

• Raincountry Flyfishers monthly meeting - Meet at 7 p.m. on Thursday, March 25, at the Mendenhall River Community School library. Tony Soltys will demonstrate how to tie a smolt pattern called the "Mushmouth," which is a hot pattern on the East Coast and should work on any fish that feeds on sand lances, smolts or herring. • Juneau Sports Association adult slow pitch softball registration - Team registration takes place on Tuesday, March 30, at the Travelodge Hotel Meeting Room. • Zach Gordon Youth Center climbing wall - Climbing wall hours are 3-7 p.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays and 3-9 p.m. on Fridays. The climbing wall can be used by people of all ages. Climbers age 20-younger climb free, while adults 21-older pay $5 to use the wall. Youth-adult interaction is encouraged, so an adult climbing with a youth pays no fee. Private rental times are available for $25 per hour. Info and scheduling: Zach Gordon Youth Center, 586-2635.

• Eaglecrest Ski Area nordic ski lessons - Nordic ski lessons are available through the Eaglecrest Ski and Snowboard School. A 2-hour learn-to-classic-ski lesson or a learn-to-skate-ski lesson costs $17 each, while 2-hour intermediate and advanced clinics cost $20. Learn-to-Telemark-ski lessons are $17 and include and all-day surface lift ticket, while 2-hour intermediate and advanced classes cost $20. During the month of February, the Telemark series takes place from 1-4 p.m. on Sundays and costs $30 or $48 with a lift ticket. Info: Eaglecrest Ski and Snowboard School, 790-2001.

• Juneau Department of Parks and Recreation Wednesday and Saturday hikes - For updates on locations of Wednesday and Saturday group hikes, call the Juneau Parks and Recreation Hikes Hotline. Always remember to bring plenty of food and water, wear warm layers of clothing and proper footwear for the hike. No dogs or firearms are allowed. Wednesday hikes are limited to hikers 18 years of age or older. Saturday hikes are open to families, and children must be accompanied by an adult.
