• 2005 Southeast Shootout Basketball Tournament - This middle-school basketball tournament, sponsored by Juneau HoopTime and featuring boys and girls teams from across Southeast, will be held at Floyd Dryden Middle School. Games will also be held at Riverbend Elementary School on Wednesday and Thursday, March 23-24. Friday-Sunday, March 25-27

• 2005 JIV and JV Alpine Skiing State Championships - Eaglecrest Ski Area and the Juneau Ski Club will host this state meet for skiers ages 9-12, with a super-G race on Friday, a giant slalom race on Saturday and a slalom race on Sunday. Tentative race schedules call for first runs at 10 a.m. and second runs at 1 p.m. each day. • Juneau-Douglas High School soccer Spring Fever Tournament - The Crimson Bear boys and girls open their seasons by hosting in-state and out-of-state teams at Adair-Kennedy Memorial Park. Times and teams TBA.

Saturday, April 2

• Glacier 10K and 1-Mile Run/Walk: Race-day registration starts at 9 a.m. for a 10 a.m. race start at the Mendenhall Glacier Visitors' Center parking lot. This year's event, which supports the Juneau-Douglas High School track and field team, includes T-shirts for the first 120 entrants, the new 1-mile walk and a citywide elementary school mile championship. Pre-register at JRC/The Alaska Club, Foggy Mountain Shop or Nugget Alaskan Outfitter for $15 adults/$10 kids. Race-day registration is $18 adults/$11 kids. MEETINGS / CLINICS / ANNOUNCEMENTS

• Eaglecrest Ski Area March events - It's March Madness time at Eaglecrest Ski Area. Events include: a variety of ski and snowboard camps over Spring Break, March 21-25; Alaska Youth Ski League state championships from March 24-27; and an Easter celebration with a purple bunny chase, egg hunt and bonnet contest on March 27. • Youth track and field training camp - The Juneau-Douglas High School track and field team will conduct a training camp for kids in grades 2-8 on Thursday, March 24, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The camp will start at the Glacier Valley Elementary School gym, and will guide participants through fun and motivating techniques important to a variety of track and field discliplines. • Evening Masters Swimming program - The Augustus Brown pool hosts a twice-weekly Evening Masters Swimming program. The program will meet from 6:30-7:30 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and is designed to promote and improve the physical and mental well-being of adults age 19-older. Participants must be able to swim crawlstroke and backstroke. Info: Augustus Brown swim pool, 586-5325.

OPEN GYMS / SCRIMMAGES / ONGOING

• Mount Jumbo preschool open gym - Preschool open gyms for children ages 1-6 and an adult parent or caregiver take place from 10:30 a.m. to noon on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays through April. There must be at least one adult present for every four kids. There is a $1 per child fee, or punchcards for $10 and $50 can be bought at the gym, which is located at 909 4th Street in Douglas. Tricycles, mats, balls, a Little Tykes climber, building blocks and a kid-sized basketball hoop are available. • Zach Gordon Youth Center climbing wall - Climbing wall hours are 5-7 p.m. on Mondays, and 3:30-7 p.m. on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays. The climbing wall can be used by people of all ages. Climbers age 20-younger climb free, while adults 21-older pay $5 to use the wall. Youth-adult interaction is encouraged, so an adult climbing with a youth pays no fee. • Juneau Archery Club youth shooting - Archery shooting is held on Friday nights, with sessions at 6 p.m., 7 p.m. and 8 p.m. Space is limited and is available on a first-come, first-served basis. The cost of each session is $1, and they are designed to help youngsters learn the basics of archery. Info: John Cooper, 789-3422, or by e-mail at jcooper@gci.net.

• Juneau Community Schools open gyms - Basketball, volleyball and soccer open gyms for adults are available several times a week. Basketball and volleyball open gyms are held Fridays and Sundays from 7-9 p.m. at Dzantik'i Heeni Middle School. Soccer open gyms are held Sundays from 6:45-8:45 p.m. at Floyd Dryden Middle School. The cost is $5 per session, and 10-session punchcards are available for $40 each. Info: Juneau Community Schools, 463-1717.

• Basketball/volleyball court rentals available - The Juneau Community Schools program has basketball/volleyball court rental times available from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturdays at Dzantik'i Heeni Middle School. The cost to rent the court is $20 per hour, which must be paid at the time of rental. This is for adult activities only. Info: Juneau Community Schools, 463-1717.
