Age: 13.

Sound off on the important issues at

Grade: 8.

School: Dzantik'i Heeni Middle School.

Art of choice: Ceramics.

Experience: She has been practicing clay sculpture since the beginning of the school semester.

Self reflection: "I chose to work with clay slabs to make my dog, because that way the sculpture would not need to be hollowed out in the end, to prevent explosion in the firing process."

All in the family: Her mother, Jeannette Francis, who attended the school of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, creates clay sculptures, mainly of people.

Future plans: She wants to be a writer.

Activities: She is also involved in soccer, wrestling, track and cross-country.

Their teacher, Kathleen Wiest, says: "[These art students] have been working together for the past several months building large scale clay dogs. Much of their work required independent problem solving for both creative and structural challenges. These girls have amazing tenacity. Even when things weren't going well, they worked collaboratively and independently to resolve problems and push themselves to higher levels of mastery."
