Juneau resident Barbara Mae Cheatham, 78, died March 21, 2006, in Juneau.

She was born on Nov. 19, 1927, to Franklin and Mable Miller in Littleton, Colo. She married her high school sweetheart James L. Cheatham in 1949, and they had four children. They family lived in Colorado, Oregon and Utah. They moved to Anchorage in 1964 and settled in Juneau in 1974. She was a homemaker, and she was a Juneau resident for 32 years.
Family members said, "Growing up in a family of railroad enthusiasts led to her lifelong love of trains. ... Barbara loved the charter boat business she and her husband owned and operated for 18 years. She also loved crossword puzzles, cooking and was a voracious reader. Her love of reading motivated her to become a committed supporter of 'Friends of the Library.'
She was preceded in death by her first-born son, Loren Cheatham.
She is survived by her husband, James L. Cheatham of Juneau; son, Larry Cheatham of Seattle and Ken (Ron) Cheatham of Fairbanks; daughter, Sherry (Herb) Brooks of Puyallup, Wash.; grandsons, Jason Richards of Fairbanks and Justin Brooks of Seattle.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 25 at Alaska Memorial Park & Mortuary, 3839 Riverside Drive in Juneau.
