Alaska educators interested in applying for this summer’s Basic Arts Institutes offered in Juneau, Kenai and Fairbanks by the Alaska Arts Education Consortium have until Monday, March 28, to submit online applications. Applications are available at www.akartsed.org
Those interested in the Basic Arts Institute or the concurrent Advanced Arts Institute in Anchorage may begin registering through the Anchorage Academy at www.asdk12.org/depts/staff_dev/asdsa.asp or through www.akartsed.org. There is no deadline for registering for the Anchorage institutes.
Basic Arts Institutes are intensive two-week sessions designed for practicing educators to experience how the arts —visual, storytelling, drama, music, movement and traditional cultural arts — can increase student performance and motivation in grades K-12 through hands-on activities, study of current brain research and theory, and the development of lessons and ideas to use in the classroom.
The Advanced Arts Institute is for educators who have already attended at least one Basic Arts Institute. It will help them further develop their capacity to teach in, through, and about the arts, analyze their own teaching, develop a deeper focus on one or more arts forms, and design lessons integrated with other parts of the curriculum.
