Tlingit carver Doug Chilton will lead today’s Art of Place lecture at UAS, beginning at 10 a.m. in the Glacier View Room.
The Art of Place series is designed to give community members a chance to connect with renowned Alaska Native artists in an informal setting, and was created by Ernestine Hayes, author and UAS assistant professor of English. She hopes to make the series an annual event.
The next lecture, scheduled for April 7, will feature Florence Sheakley, who will speak about on beading and button blankets. The final lecture, on April 21, will be led by Helen Watkins, who will discuss gathering and preserving local food. This lecture will be followed by full potluck geared toward traditional foods.
Today’s lecture and the lecture on April 7 will be followed by a desser potluck.
Other speakers in the series have included weavers Della Cheney and Clarissa Rizal, and silver carver Ed Kunz.
