JUNEAU — State senators questioned the political leanings of an Alaska Judicial Council nominee during a confirmation hearing on Wednesday.
Valdez oil terminal technician Don Haase was nominated by the governor for an opening on the council, a seven-person board that nominates candidates for open judgeship positions.
Sen. Joe Paskvan, a Democrat from Anchorage, questioned Haase’s affiliation with conservative group Eagle Forum Alaska, citing posts on the organization’s blog decrying judicial activism that bear Haase’s name.
Haase says he was president of the conservative organization’s Alaska chapter for two months, and that the posts were written by other people.
Haase says his political views would not interfere with his duties if elected to the council.
The confirmation was ultimately held over for further consideration.
