Dzantik'i Heeni boys rally to defeat Kake by a point

Hoonah boys, Sitka and HoopTime A girls also victorious

Down by 12 points in the first half, Dzantik'i Heeni rallied to beat Kake 37-36 in the first day of boys middle school action Monday afternoon at Juneau-Douglas High School.

Robert Beierly scored 27 points to lead Dzantik'i Heeni, while Bubba Larsen added seven points, including the game-winning free throw with 5.9 seconds left.

Lance Doake led Kake with 11 points, while Trevor Morris had eight points and Cory Padgett added seven points, including a 3-pointer that tied the score with 14.7 seconds to go.

In the other boys game on Monday morning, D.J. Lindstrom scored 18 points to lead the Hoonah Braves over Sitka Tribe 44-31.

Donavan Smith scored 11 points, while Austin Lindoff added 10 points and Kellian Skaflestad chipped in seven for the Braves.

Bryn Calhoun led Sitka Tribe with 18 points, with Kory Hansen adding five points.

In girls middle school action, Sitka Tribe beat Dzantik'i Heeni 47-12 as Lela McArthur scored 17 points.

Caitlin Parrent added 10 points for Sitka Tribe, while Brooke Stockel scored six points.

Kailey Mauska scored eight points to lead Dzantik'i Heeni, which had no other player with more than two points.

Due to a changed game time that coaches weren't notified about, HoopTime A advanced with a forfeit victory over HoopTime B in the other girls game Monday morning.

HoopTime A scrimmaged Sitka Tribe for the first half and then scrimmaged the late-arriving HoopTime B team in the second half and no scores were kept.

HoopTime A plays at 11 a.m. today against a throw-together team from Juneau that will replace Kake, which couldn't send its team to Gold Medal. HoopTime B plays at 9 a.m. Wednesday against the loser of this morning's 10 a.m. Hoonah vs. Sitka Tribe game. Dzantik'i Heeni next plays at 9 a.m. on Wednesday against the loser of today's game between HoopTime A and the Juneau throw-together team.

In boys action today, HoopTime plays Hoonah at 9 a.m., while Yakutat plays Dzantik'i Heeni at 5:30 p.m. In Wednesday's 3:30 p.m. game, Sitka Tribe plays the loser of today's Yakutat-Dzantik'i Heeni game. In Wednesday's 8 p.m. game at Marie Drake, Kake plays the loser of today's Hoonah-HoopTime game.
