Juneau opposes land swap

Letter to the editor

Posted: Thursday, March 25, 2004

If this is starting to sound like a broken record, I apologize, but it is obvious that the majority of Juneau residents do not agree with Sen. Murkowski's giveaway of Berners Bay.

Sen. Murkowski continues to push forward the Berners Bay land swap despite the loud public outcry in opposition. The people of Juneau have repeatedly demonstrated their protest to the trade, objectors numbering in the hundreds at the town hall meeting last September and another large crowd enduring a downpour at last week's rally on the capital steps. Nor does hardly a day go by that there isn't a letter to the editor asking the senator to reconsider her bill.

The trade of a valuable resource such as Berners Bay for the predominantly logged wasteland near Ketchikan, a quarter of the size, seems completely illogical. Privatization of this valuable piece of land would transfer the wealth of the people to a single user group for their personal gain. The land swap is a blatant disregard for the public interest. Sen. Murkowski, please listen to your constituents.
