FAIRBANKS - The chancellor of the University of Alaska Fairbanks is planning to formally announce that he is leaving his post.
The Fairbanks Daily News-Miner reports that Steve Jones has no immediate plans but hopes to be in a new position by the fall.
He says he has decided to announce his departure now to give University of Alaska President Mark Hamilton time to find a replacement.
Jones says he and his wife, Judy, would like to be closer to their children and grandchildren, who live on the East Coast.
Jones was named chancellor in 2004. Before coming to Fairbanks, he was vice chancellor at North Carolina State University.
